School and Conservatory
The CityDance School & Conservatory teaches in eight state-of-the-art studios at four locations, including its main home at the Music Center at Strathmore. Since 2005, it has been providing high-quality dance training to over 700 students a year, ages 3 to 19. The CityDance School offers a well-rounded curriculum of Vaganova ballet training and contemporary dance techniques rounded out by jazz, hip-hop and world dance forms. CityDance strives to meet the needs of each individual according to his or her ability and goals, and a student's level is determined by these factors rather than age. For ages 7 and above, an audition is required. Tailoring your curriculum begins with understanding these divisions:
Little Movers: Discovering Dance (Ages 3-7)
Dance classes designed to emphasize creativity and introduce technique, for dancers ages 3-7. Developed by Lorraine Spiegler, CityDance Artistic Director & dance educator for 25 + years, classes are rooted in a fundamental understanding of children’s basic developmental phases. No audition is required. For more information on the right class for your little mover, please submit an inquiry here.
Lower School: Formative Years of Training (Ages 7-11)
Lower School students build a solid foundation in classical and contemporary technique and develop their performance skills. Classes emphasize the development of artistic sensibility, musicality and creative thinking. Study in multiple genres is required. At this stage students are eligible to be tracked for the more intensive Conservatory program. All Lower School students participate in the culminating Children & Youth Year-End performance in the main concert hall at Strathmore.
Upper School: Select Program (Ages 12-19)
Audition required. Students are placed by ability and commitment rather than age.
The Select program is for students who show dedication and promise but may not necessarily desire a professional performance career. Often, Select students excel in a single genre or have extra-curricular and academic activities that preclude them from the time commitment required for Conservatory level studies. Students in the Select program may be identified for Conservatory advancement when they demonstrate elevated technique and artistic promise. Students may also take Conservatory classes in specific genres in which they excel.
The Conservatory is for young dancers who are ready for intensive study and the demand of the professional world. Students who show talent, drive and desire -- and are able to make the time commitment to pursue pre-professional dance -- may be selected by Artistic Director Lorraine Spiegler for the Conservatory.
