Come Explore and Dance Around The World and Into the Stars With Us This Summer!

Created by Lorraine Spiegler, Artistic Director of the CityDance School and Conservatory, CityDance’s themed children and youth camps  offer learning and fun through culture and creativity. Young dancers learn multi-cultural myths and themes from around the globe and are invited to explore how the tales relate to their daily lives. They take daily classes in ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop and world dance forms and learn challenging choreography in multiple styles. Young dancers imagine, improvise and learn to express themselves through the creation of their own dances as well. Dance, ideas, cultural themes, music, visual art and poetry are woven together in a final performance for family and friends.

Based on the traditional Cuban Folktale rewritten by Lucia Gonzalez  and illustrated by Lulu Delacre, The Bossy Galito (winner of the Pura Belpre Illustrator Award Honor) and summer camp of the same name celebrates the Latino cultural experience. The story tells of a bossy rooster on the way to his uncle’s wedding who refuses to say please to get the help he needs. He finally says the word and has everyone and everything from sticks, goats, water, grass, fire and even the sun helping him! Campers visit Havana and the Caribbean, learn about the symbol of the rooster and the importance of family and cooperation through community caring. Children will dance to Cuban rhythms including Salsa at the wedding celebration, sing songs about friendship, learn some Spanish movement poems and discover their own movement expression along the way.

Students learn about all things Egyptian  -- from papyrus, Hieroglyphs, and the creatures of the Nile to the patterns, colors of the gems and scarabs that gave true significance to the order and balance of the Egyptian world.  Centered on a pair of golden mystical sandals crafted not by human hands but rather made golden by the light of dawn, the story reveals the Double truth of the Egyptian concept of Ma’at.  The falcon god Horus, the sun god Ra and Bes the god protectorate of children conspire in the royal city of Memphis to bring light and truth to the Upper and Lower kingdoms of ancient Egypt.  Traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern music are introduced and used to inspire learning in multiple genres-- ballet, contemporary, jazz and hip hop-- which are  showcased in a final presentation.

Principles of wisdom, friendship and brother/sisterhood are celebrated when the Kings head hunter, his daughter, and her devoted blood brother conspire to free the Golden Goose and return her to the Lake of Fragrant Lilies.
