In January, a select group of six CityDance DREAM students attended the 31st International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference in Dayton, Ohio, the only national gathering of black dance professionals in the United States. This conference gives our students the opportunity to train with the top black dance companies and master teachers in the world and to engage in invaluable professional and networking opportunities.
DREAM students took class with distinguished faculty including Donald Byrd, Alicia Graf Mack, Germaul Barnes and Durell Comedy from Mark Morris Dance Group and took classes in Fagan and Dunham technique. In addition to master classes, students also participated in the IABD college dance fair and attended the closing ceremony performance at the Victoria Theatre, a performance that included Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, Lula Washington Dance Company, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Philadanco!, Robert Moses Kin, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater and Ron K. Brown Evidence.
Our annual trip to the IABD conference serves as a focused and uninterrupted time for DREAM students to elevate their training and push the limits of what they may think is possible for them. It is also a great time for educating, inspiring and connecting them with communities and leaders that pioneered opportunities for black dancers across generations.
