During a journey through traditional Mexican Folklore, students explore the global mystery of the beautiful monarch butterfly and its near 600 mile flight from the U.S. to Mexico each year. In Mexican culture, monarch butterflies are believed to be the souls of the departed ones and are linked to the important celebration of the Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead and its many customs. The traditions of sugar skulls, visits to the cemetery, honoring the ancestors, and Spanish language and folk songs offer a glistening view of Mexican culture from the perspective of a young dancer. Students train daily in ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, as well as improvisation and composition. Come join us as we take flight on the wings of the monarch butterfly!
