CityDance Ensemble is not a traditional modern or contemporary dance company. Unlike most such companies, where all the dances are made by a single choreographer, CityDance is a repertory company, meaning that the dances made for the stage are created by many different artists. This collaborative spirit is at the heart of the entire artistic process. Partnerships with some of the leading arts organizations in the Washington area, from the Music Center at Strathmore to the Harman Center for the Arts to the Baltimore Sympohony Orchestra, are a vital part of the company's work.
CityDance builds its dance repertory based on three signature efforts -- The Legacy Series, which restores great works of dance from as far back as the mid 1930s; Next Gen Series, which commissions work from up-and-coming choreographers around the world; and The Original Series, which is an ongoing collaboration with composers in which new music and new dances are made together. In addition, CityDance FilmWORKS, the company's award-winning film division, makes original dances for the camera and presents film festivals in partnerships with leading organizations around the region.
Get to know the artists, our repertory, and our creative process on these pages. Where noted, there are videos and photo galleries that further explore the people, and the projects, behind CityDance.
