More Information
CityDance Ensemble was founded in 1996 and began as a group of 18 part-time dancers with day jobs who performed in a converted 100-seat dance studio. Since it’s founding, CityDance has been on a steady climb as a “brave and talented troupe willing to take risks” (The Washington Post). Now a full-time company of eight professional dancers, CityDance Ensemble is Washington, D.C.’s only contemporary repertory dance company and hires choreographers, composers, and musicians from the United States and around the world.
CityDance Early Arts, the company’s
outreach education division, teaches and performs for more than
25,000 children in DC metro schools each year. Early Arts has an
unwavering commitment to those communities where arts education
is the least accessible and affordable. Early Arts runs a number
of outreach programs, including its D.A.R.E. and D.R.E.A.M. programs.
CityDance operates two education facilities providing
dance and fitness training for youth and adults. The CityDance
Center at Strathmore opened in January 2005 and is located in
the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland. It offers
a full range of class and workshop offerings, as well as a conservatory
program for pre-professional students. The CityDance
Center at Mt. Vernon Square opened in January 2007 and is located in downtown
Washington, DC at the Historic Carnegie Library. CityDance
Center at Mt. Vernon Square offers weekly hip hop and swing
classes for adults.
CityDance FilmWORKS creates original dances for the camera and presents internationally acclaimed films from around the world in an annual dance-on-camera festival. FilmWORKS presents both films for the cinema and multi-media works that appear alongside the repertory company. FilmWORKS films have been screened at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Dance Place, and the Music Center at Strathmore. |
